Vin and M-Code Decoder Tool
How to decode a VW Vanagon VIN and M-codes
Use the free decoder above to explore a Vanagon or T3's original identity and factory equipment. It includes North American Vanagons, European T3/T25s and early 1980 chassis-number formats. Start with the number on the van, then compare the result with its records and the equipment fitted today.
Where do I find my Vanagon VIN?
Look for the vehicle identification plate. North American vans also normally have a VIN visible through the driver's side of the windshield. On European T3s, check the chassis stamping near the front crossmember. Locations and formats vary by market and year; use the appropriate owner's manual if you are unsure.
Copy every character carefully. Early chassis numbers and later 17-character VINs use different formats. A model year can differ from the year of first registration, so a difference between the decoder and a registration date is a reason to check the records.
What are M-codes, and where are they listed?
M-codes identify factory options and equipment. Look for the equipment sticker or service-book record; depending on the van, information may also be near the fusebox or on a metal plate under a front seat. Enter the option-code section into the M-code tool, keeping leading zeros and letter prefixes. Spaces, commas and separate lines are accepted.
What can the results tell me?
Depending on the number and the records available, the tool can identify details such as model year, vehicle family, assembly plant and listed factory equipment. It reports codes it does not recognize so you can investigate them further. An unknown code is not proof that the plate or vehicle is wrong.
Does a decoded VIN prove which engine or parts are fitted now?
No. Decoding describes original identification information. Over decades, engines, transmissions, interiors and other equipment may have changed. Confirm the installed components and their part numbers before ordering replacements. The decoder is a research aid, not a vehicle-history report or ownership certificate.
Is my VIN sent to a decoding service?
The tool processes your entries in your browser; it does not send them to an external VIN-decoding service. No account or payment is needed to use it.
