LiveTheVanLife · The owner's reference library
The T3 Westfalia
resource library.
Camper handbooks, repair manuals, specifications and practical know-how for the VW T3, T25 and Vanagon Westfalia. Find your model. Understand your equipment. Get back to enjoying your van.
01 / Find your way
What are you working on?
Start with three references: the VW vehicle handbook, the Westfalia camper supplement, and the manual for each appliance. Record your model year, market, conversion-plate details and appliance model numbers. A replacement fridge, heater or battery system needs its own documentation.
02 / Manuals, documents & guides
The Westfalia library.
Search a model, year, part or problem. Try 1987, RM182, Joker wiring, curtains or diesel. Use filters together to narrow the list.
Market filters also include resources labeled “All markets”; always read the applicability note. “Multilingual” documents are listed separately when the index does not identify every language.

03 / Models & specifications
“Westfalia” is the beginning of the description.
T3, T25 and Vanagon are names used for the same vehicle generation in different markets. Westfalia identifies the camper conversion. Interior layout, roof, electrical equipment and appliances vary, and decades of modifications can change the original specification.
Vanagon full camper
The familiar kitchen cabinet, sink, cooker, fridge, storage and narrower rear sleeping bench. Choose the camper supplement by model year, then check each appliance.
North American handbooks →Joker to Atlantic
Joker, Club Joker, California and Atlantic documentation covers different equipment and roof choices. Mosaik kits and RHD conversions need their own references.
European handbooks →Weekender & Multivan
The later North American Wolfsburg Weekender and Multivan use a wider bench and omit the full kitchen. Earlier “Weekender” arrangements differ. A pop-top alone does not identify a full camper.
Compare the layouts →Selected period camper specifications
These examples belong to the named handbooks. They are not universal values for every Westfalia.
| Equipment | 1987 North American camper | 1985 European Joker / Club Joker |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh-water tank | 50 L / 13.2 US gal | 55 L for Joker / Club Joker 1 and 3 |
| Refrigerator volume | 45 L as stated in the camper supplement | 41 L gross |
| Shore power | 110–125 V AC | 220 V AC, 50 Hz, in this period handbook |
| Waste water | Sink drain exits under the van; no waste tank described | 20 L waste-water tank |
| Battery arrangement | Camper loads described as drawing from the vehicle battery | 12 V, 63 Ah leisure battery under the driver’s seat |
| Roof reference | Front luggage rack: 50 kg / 110 lb maximum in this handbook | Closed pop-top: 2,080 mm; high top with vents closed: 2,700 mm |
1987 supplement: water, electricity, refrigerator and luggage-rack sections · 1985 translated handbook: technical data, PDF page 25. Measure current vehicle height and check the actual tank, battery and rack. Collect sink waste for suitable disposal. The front luggage-tray limit is not a rating for an added pop-top rack.
Gas pressure and fridge models: why the appliance plate matters
The US RM182B service manual specifies 11 inches water column. The RM184 EGI / EGP instructions cover 50 mbar or 28 mbar versions and require the pressure on the rating plate. These are different installations. A regulator chosen only by connector size or “Westfalia fit” can be wrong.
Record the fridge model, gas category, pressure, supply voltage and serial number before ordering parts. Have a qualified gas technician confirm compatibility after an appliance or regulator change.

Which canvas fits: early or late roof?
GoWesty identifies the original Vanagon roof attachment as stapled through 1984 and screwed into retaining strips from 1985. Inspect the upper attachment before buying: a swapped roof or previous conversion may no longer match the van’s model year.
The VW camping-equipment repair booklet also separates early and later canvas procedures. Photograph the retainers, corners, seals and lifting frame before dismantling.
Canvas fitment guidance · Factory roof and canvas procedures
Seats, sleeping space, weights and engine specifications
A bed’s sleeping capacity does not establish safe travel seating. Confirm the installed seats, approved mountings and seat belts; cushions and bed platforms are not passenger restraints. Full campers and Weekenders use different rear layouts.
Use the vehicle handbook and data plate for axle loads and gross vehicle weight. Weigh a travel-ready van if payload matters. Engine capacity, power, oil, cooling and gearbox specifications depend on the actual engine and transmission, including any conversion.

04 / Everyday ownership
Small habits that make camping easier.
Close the roof without trapping the canvas
Open the sliding door to let air escape. Stow the upper bed correctly, lower the roof partway and gather the fabric inward, keeping it clear of the hinges and latch. Check around the outside before latching. If the roof resists closing, find the obstruction before applying more force.
If weather forces you to pack the canvas away damp, reopen it and dry it as soon as possible. Letting it stay damp encourages mildew.
Help the original fridge work in hot weather
Start cooling before loading, use chilled food, leave airflow around the contents, and keep the cabinet’s ventilation openings clear. Park level for best performance and use a fridge thermometer to check the result.
The original RM182B’s 12 V mode is enabled with the engine running and has no thermostat. It is not equivalent to a modern compressor fridge supplied by a leisure battery. Choose the mode using the exact appliance instructions.
Know what shore power actually supplies
The campsite hookup supplies mains circuits. It does not prove that a battery charger is present or that every camper load is connected to an auxiliary battery. Trace the installed arrangement and label it.
A European mains inlet, charger or fridge must match the supply where you travel. A plug adapter changes the connector; it does not convert voltage. For a battery upgrade, document chemistry, charger compatibility, isolation, cable sizes and fuse protection.
European camper wiring · Original LG20 charger · Auxiliary battery care
Make water-system care part of packing up
Drain and clean the tank after a trip, let it dry, and inspect hoses and connections for leaks. Before freezing weather, winterize the tank, pump, taps, hoses and any city-water connection using instructions appropriate to the installed system.
Check where the sink drain goes. A van may have an underfloor tank, a portable container or the original direct drain. Plan a suitable collection and disposal method at camp.
Camper water-system instructions · Storage and winterizing guide · Waste-tank fitting reference
Measure before ordering interior parts
Keep a small record of window sizes, curtain tracks, mattress dimensions, cabinet openings and appliance labels. A nominal fridge volume does not establish cabinet fit: account for hinges, door swing, ventilation, wiring and mounting points.
Use the curtain pattern and exploded drawings as references, then check your actual interior. Trial-fit replacement laminate and trim before bonding or cutting the final piece.
Curtain reference · Laminate guidance · Refrigerator options
Keep the right manuals available offline
Open the source documents and save the ones for your van to your phone or tablet before a trip. Include the camper supplement, engine-specific repair information, appliance manuals and any conversion instructions. Check that the downloads actually open without a connection.
Photograph your appliance plates and fuse layout. Add your own notes about modifications so someone helping with a fault can see what is fitted.
05 / Find the right next step
What is your Westfalia doing?
Start with identification and simple observations. The links below take you to the relevant procedures, diagrams and fault charts.
The refrigerator will not cool
Note the fridge model, selected energy source and whether the problem affects one mode or every mode. Check accessible switches, the intended supply, unobstructed ventilation and vehicle level. Give the refrigerator time to respond.
Persistent gas ignition problems, damaged flue parts, an ammonia smell or signs of overheating need professional inspection. Do not bypass flame-safety devices or keep attempting ignition when gas is suspected.
The water pump is silent, or runs without delivering water
Confirm there is water in the tank and that the correct source is selected. For a silent pump, start with the camper master switch, battery supply and the correct fuse shown in the matching diagram. If it runs, look for visible leaks or a disconnected hose and follow the pump’s priming instructions.
Stop if the tank is empty or the system is frozen. Do not substitute a larger fuse to make a fault disappear.
The auxiliary battery does not charge
Identify which charger or isolator is installed and whether the problem occurs on shore power, while driving, or both. The original LG20, a split-charge relay and a modern DC–DC charger are different systems.
Use the matching wiring and charger documentation. Battery type matters, especially after a lithium conversion. Mains-side testing and internal charger repairs belong with a qualified technician.
The Eberspächer heater starts, then shuts down
Read the heater and control-unit labels first. B1L, D1L, B2L and D2L procedures are not interchangeable, and a modern replacement heater uses different diagnostics. Note the shutdown timing or fault indication and whether air paths are obstructed.
Follow the matching fault chart; do not repeatedly restart a malfunctioning combustion heater. Exhaust leaks, fuel smells and damaged combustion components require inspection before further use.
B2L / D2L fault-finding manual · All heater and timer documents
The pop-top leaks or will not latch
For closing problems, check bedding, canvas, latch alignment and the lifting frame before forcing anything. For water ingress, identify whether it begins at the skylight, canvas seam, roof seal, rack fixing or luggage-tray area.
Photograph the water path and inspect hidden corrosion during roof or cabinet work. Use the factory dismantling instructions to locate fasteners before removing panels.
Gas and mains electricity need the right expertise. Use the cooker only with ventilation and never as a space heater. If you smell gas, stop using appliances, avoid ignition sources, shut off the supply if safe, leave the vehicle and arrange qualified assistance. Old manuals describe period equipment; current servicing requirements and the condition of your installation still apply.
