Why should I restore my Van in Mexico?

Restoring a van in Mexico comes down to a simple truth: you can achieve an exceptionally high level of craftsmanship without the inflated costs that have become standard elsewhere. Labor costs in Mexico are dramatically lower, and that difference translates directly into real savings—not corner-cutting. A comparable paint job with proper bodywork and rust repair in the U.S. or Canada routinely lands in the $20,000–$30,000 range, and it’s not uncommon for owners to be quoted $35,000 or more before a single upgrade is added.
Those numbers usually reflect paint and bodywork alone. Once you start layering in upholstery, mechanical repairs, suspension, window seals, tinting, undercoating, and all the other details a proper restoration requires, costs can escalate quickly—often beyond what many owners initially planned. In Mexico, those same services remain accessible. That means you’re able to restore the van completely and cohesively, instead of stopping short or spreading the work out over years due to budget constraints.
Just as important, restoring your van in Mexico allows the work to be done efficiently and intentionally in one place. Instead of bouncing between multiple shops—body, paint, mechanical, interior—everything can be addressed together, with each phase informing the next. The result is a better-finished vehicle, fewer compromises, and a restoration that feels thought-through rather than pieced together.
And then there’s the experience itself. Restoring your van in Mexico isn’t just a transaction—it’s an adventure. Your van’s journey ends in a place defined by sun, sea, and open roads, where picking it up feels less like an errand and more like the beginning of a trip. You don’t just get a restored vehicle—you get a story, a destination, and a first drive you won’t forget.

Why should I restore my Van with Live The Van Life Restorations?

Picture
Finding skilled craftsmen at a reasonable price is only one part of a successful restoration. What truly matters is experience—earned the hard way, over years of building, driving, breaking, fixing, and refining these vehicles. At LiveTheVanLife Restorations, our foundation comes from building Vanagons for ourselves long before we ever built them for clients. That hands-on history matters. We know where these vans fail, where they age poorly, and which “upgrades” look good on paper but don’t hold up in the real world.
Because of that experience, we approach every build with a critical eye and a long-term mindset. We know the common rust zones that get overlooked, the mechanical weak points that need to be addressed proactively, and the small details that make a big difference in reliability and drivability. We also maintain strong relationships with the most respected suppliers and manufacturers in the Vanagon world, which means proven parts, proper solutions, and no experimental guesswork on your vehicle. Just as important, we’ve learned from past builds what works—and what doesn’t. We’ve made the mistakes, refined the process, and dialed in the systems so you don’t have to be the test case.
Our work speaks for itself. Vans we’ve built have been featured in magazines, highlighted on YouTube, and recognized within the community, including winning Best 2WD Van at Syncrofest in California. Those acknowledgments aren’t the goal—but they are a reflection of the consistency, thoughtfulness, and care that go into every build that leaves our shop.
There’s also a bigger picture to how we operate. In July 2024, we converted workshop to be powered entirely by renewable energy. With an 11 kW solar array and a 15 kWh lithium battery system, we operate completely off-grid—something virtually unheard of in the automotive restoration world. It’s not a gimmick. It reflects how we think about sustainability, independence, and responsibility, and it aligns naturally with the spirit of van life itself.
In the end, choosing LiveTheVanLife Restorations means choosing experience, accountability, and intention. Your van isn’t just another project—it’s a vehicle with history, future plans, and personal meaning. We treat it that way, every step of the process.

I took this tired old 1982 Vanagon Westfalia...
Picture
And created the ultimate 2wd Vanagon Westfalia. Winner of Syncrofest best in show in 2018
Over the years my builds have been featured in Magazines, Youtube videos with over 1 million views (See Here), and have won best in show at car shows. I love taking tired old Vans and giving them a second life. In addition to paint and bodywork we can perform mechanical overhauls, from complete suspension rebuilds, replacement stock engines, brakes, interior upholstery, and transmissions.

What is our process?

Disassembly of 1990 Syncro Doka for paint and bodywork
Applying Clear Coat to this freshly painted Westy
When comparing paint and body shops, it’s critical to understand how the work is being done—not just what the final price is. A proper Vanagon paint job cannot skip steps. Period. Many low-cost shops simply mask off trim and windows and spray over everything. On a Vanagon, that approach is a guaranteed failure. Nearly every one of these vehicles has rust hiding beneath the window seals, and masking over it means the rust will reappear quickly—leaving you with a “fresh” paint job that starts bubbling and failing in short order. Overspray, poor edges, and unfinished details are another common giveaway of shortcut work.
That’s not how we operate. Here’s what a proper Vanagon paint and body process looks like in our shop:
  • Remove all exterior accessories: lights, grilles, antennas, hookups, door handles, and trim
  • Remove all glass, including windshield and rear hatch glass
  • Remove all doors: both front doors, the sliding door, and the rear hatch
  • Cut out rust completely and weld in new metal where required
  • Repair and straighten dents and panel imperfections
  • Primer
  • Paint (we use high-quality PPG paint systems)
  • Sand, polish, and refine the finish
  • Wax and protect the final surface
  • Reinstall everything using new window seals and replacement seals as needed (every van is different)
This is a detailed, time-intensive process. For bodywork and paint alone, the typical timeline is around four months. A standard job with moderate rust usually requires 400–500 man hours. Extensive rust repair, metal fabrication, or panel replacement can extend that timeline to six months or more. This isn’t inefficiency—it’s what doing the job correctly actually takes.
Vanagons are complex, aging vehicles with hundreds of parts that must come off and go back on. It’s common for brittle, 30+ year-old components to break during disassembly. This is another reason experience matters. We either have replacement parts on hand or know exactly how and where to source them. There’s a long list of Vanagon-specific details that most general paint shops simply don’t want to deal with. We do—because this is what we specialize in.
Be cautious of shops promising unrealistically fast turnarounds. There is no shortcut to a high-quality, long-lasting paint job on a Vanagon. Done right, it takes time. And that’s exactly what we’re committed to.

Pricing

Our pricing reflects the reality of doing restoration work properly—without shortcuts, rushed timelines, or compromises in materials. A basic exterior paint and bodywork package, retaining the original color, starts at $9,995 USD. This includes full disassembly, proper rust repair, and a complete refinish using high-quality PPG paint systems. Window seals, body rubber, and any required replacement parts or metal panels are additional, as every van’s condition is different.
More complex projects—such as color changes, interior paint work, extensive rust repair, or additional body fabrication—will increase the scope and cost accordingly. A typical paint and body job with moderate rust involves approximately 500 man hours of labor. At that level, the labor cost works out to roughly $19.99 per hour, a reflection of the unique value Mexico offers—not a reduction in quality or effort.
Complete interior upholstery packages, including new carpeting, front seats, rear bench seat, and door panels, start at $3,000 USD. Every interior is built to order, with material selection and detailing tailored to the individual van.
Estimates are always free, and we encourage starting with a conversation. Our goal has never been to be the “cheap” restoration option. It’s easy to find shops advertising paint jobs for a few hundred dollars—but the materials alone for a proper Vanagon paint job cost several times that amount. Our focus is on delivering top-tier craftsmanship and exceptional customer service at a fair, transparent price—comparable in quality to the best shops north of the border, with significant cost savings.
And unlike most restoration shops, when you work with us, you have direct access to the owner throughout the entire process.
