We're biased, but we think La Paz makes a wonderful base in Baja. Come for the sunsets, food and days on the water; choose somewhere that makes the everyday details easy, too.
Our starting advice: if you will be without your van, look first at Centro and the central Malecón. Having cafés, restaurants and evening walks nearby can make your visit much easier.
How to read the price levels
These are broad editorial comparisons, not live nightly quotes or star ratings. A dorm bed, an RV pitch and a private hotel room are different booking units. Prices can cross categories with the season, room type and demand; check the total for your dates, including taxes and fees.
Where in La Paz should you stay?
Centro & the central Malecón
The easiest starting point for a first visit: restaurants, cafés and the waterfront promenade nearby. Choose a side-street room if a quieter night matters more than a front-row bay view.
Look at: Catedral, Seven Crown, HBlue Centro, Casa al Mar, Baja Club.
El Esterito
A neighborhood toward the northern end of the central waterfront. A useful area for hostel stays and apartments near the Malecón; check the actual walk to the places you plan to visit.
Look at: Esterito Hostel and Villa Esterito.
Southern city waterfront
Smaller waterfront hotels can offer more of a retreat here. Plan transport for evenings in the historic center, and check the exact surroundings before choosing solely by a sea-view photo.
Look at: La Posada and Marea La Paz.
Puerta Cortés & Marina Costa Baja
Choose this northern area for marina access, resort facilities or a spacious rental. A car or a transport budget makes it easier to combine this location with downtown dining and workshop visits.
Look at: Hotel Indigo, Courtyard and Puerta Cortés rentals.

Before choosing a campsite
Confirm opening and arrival arrangements, tent or RV acceptance, your vehicle dimensions, electrical connection, water, showers, waste disposal and pet rules. Traveler reports can help, but their dates matter. Check local conditions before making beach camping part of your plan.
Hostels & budget-friendly rooms
Spend less on your bed and more on exploring. Hostel prices are usually per person; private-room prices are usually per room.

Good for: A resort-style holiday with beach-club access

Apartments & longer stays
For a week or more, a kitchen and room to settle in can matter more than a hotel lobby. Compare the total stay price, including cleaning fees, utilities and transport.

An eight-room property whose rooms list a full kitchen, queen bed and desk. A useful option to investigate for a longer visit or for preparing some meals at home.

Airbnb, Vrbo & other apartment rentals
These can work well for families or longer visits. Search Centro and El Esterito first if you will be without a vehicle; expand to other neighborhoods once you know how you will get around.
- Compare the full weekly or monthly total, including cleaning, platform fees, deposits and any electricity charge.
- Check that the kitchen is equipped for cooking, and confirm laundry, drinking water and air conditioning in the bedrooms.
- For remote work, ask for a recent Wi-Fi speed test from inside the unit and check the workspace.
- Read recent reviews for noise, water pressure and maintenance, and check the exact address and cancellation terms.

Where should I stay without a car?
Start with Centro and the central Malecón. Compare the actual address and walking route, rather than relying on a listing that simply says “La Paz.” Beach days and workshop appointments may still need transport.
Is a waterfront hotel the same as a beach holiday?
Check carefully. The central Malecón is especially useful for walking, dining and sunsets. For a beach-focused stay, ask about the specific beach or beach club, access, facilities and current swimming conditions.
Which places work for families?
Compare the larger room categories at HBlue Centro, the suites at Casa al Mar and the residences at Puerta Cortés. Confirm the actual beds, child policy, kitchen facilities and pool setup for your family's needs.
Should I book a longer stay in advance?
Compare hotel weekly rates with apartment totals. If your plans are still evolving, a flexible initial booking can leave room to extend or move after you have seen the area. Extensions depend on availability.
