At LiveTheVanLife, our talented upholstery and restoration team brings that interior to life. From a classic Volkswagen’s seats and door panels to the cushions you sleep on in a Westfalia, we work through the colors, textures, comfort, and finishing details with you. All of our upholstery work is carried out in house by our own dedicated upholsterer, working alongside the people restoring your van.

Mexico has a proud history of working with leather, cloth, and the everyday objects that become part of people’s lives. Its craft traditions include talabartería, the skilled making of saddles and other leather goods, as well as decorative leatherwork, weaving, and furniture making. In many workshops, knowledge is passed through families and apprenticeships: how to cut a clean line, shape a material, and make an edge or a seam sit just right.
Mexican upholstery belongs within that wider culture of practical craftsmanship. A well-made seat has to do more than look beautiful. It has to support someone, fit its frame, and stand up to use. The pride is in the whole piece, including the work you may never see beneath the finished surface.
That is the tradition we are proud to be part of here in La Paz. The craft lives in patient hands, a good eye, and the willingness to keep adjusting until a piece fits properly. Modern materials and sewing equipment work alongside the judgment that only comes from doing the work.
Our team brings that care to your van. A straight seam, a shaped cushion, a neatly finished corner, and a pattern that lines up across a seat are small decisions. Together, they make an interior you notice every time you open the door.

It is rare for a restoration shop to have its own dedicated upholsterer working on staff, side by side with the rest of the team. We are proud to offer that personal connection between your ideas and the hands that bring them to life.
Our upholsterer is part of the daily life of the workshop. Your van is close at hand for measuring, pattern making, and repeated test-fitting. When a curve, corner, or clearance needs attention, the people involved can look at it together and work out the detail on the actual vehicle.
That makes a real difference when you are coordinating upholstery with paint, interior panels, cabinetry, and the other parts of a restoration. The color you love, the way you use your camper, and the details you want to keep can all be considered together.

From familiar classics to something entirely your own.
You might want to preserve the character of an original interior, refresh a well-loved camper, or carry a new color scheme throughout the van. The starting point is how you travel and what you want to enjoy when you climb inside.
Front seats & driving comfort
Discuss new covers, contrasting center panels, stitching, piping, and the condition of the foam underneath. A tired seat may need attention below the surface as well as a new finish.
Rear benches & camper cushions
Bring the rear seating into the same design as the front. For a seat that becomes a bed, we consider how the cushions fit together in both positions and the balance between sitting support and sleeping comfort.
Door panels & interior trim
Coordinate door cards and interior panels with the seats, using matching materials or a complementary texture. Openings for handles, pockets, and speakers need to be planned around the parts fitted to your van.
Carpets & floor finishes
A fresh carpet can change the feel of the whole cabin. We can discuss coverage, color, edging, and access around seat bases and fittings, with the underlying floor condition considered as part of the work.
Mattresses & pop-top cushions
Tell us where you sleep and what feels uncomfortable now. Discuss replacement covers and foam options, while allowing for storage, folding, and the clearance needed when the pop-top closes.
Color, texture & personal details
Quiet neutrals, warm browns, classic pleats, contrasting panels, or a colorful woven insert can each give a van its own identity. Share the combinations you like so we can check material suitability and availability.

Choose materials for the life you actually live.
A van interior sees long drives, sunshine, sandy clothes, spilled coffee, pets, and the occasional wet jacket. Color matters, but so do feel, cleaning, wear, and how a material behaves across the shape of a seat.
Compare the actual samples
Leather, automotive vinyl, woven upholstery, and combinations of materials each have a different character. We can help you compare available options for the areas you want to upholster. A fabric that looks beautiful in a photograph still needs to be suitable for the job.
Ask about the selected product’s care requirements, wear performance, and suitability for sunlight or moisture exposure. We discuss the specific material; those properties are not the same across every leather, vinyl, or fabric.
Comfort starts underneath
Fresh covers alone cannot correct every problem in an old seat. Foam condition, shape, support, and the seat structure all affect how it feels. Tell us about pressure points, sagging, or a mattress that is too soft or too firm.
For camper cushions, thickness also affects how the bed folds, where cushions stow, and whether the roof closes properly. We work within those practical limits while discussing your comfort preferences.
A useful tip before choosing a color
View samples in daylight alongside the paint and trim you plan to keep. Phone screens can change how colors look, and a close match to an aged original material may not be an exact match. Share any material you want to supply before ordering so we can discuss suitability and the quantity needed.

Agree the direction & scope
We discuss materials, colors, foam, detailing, budget priorities, and timing. The condition of the existing seats and panels helps determine what is involved. Confirm the scope and estimate before work begins.
Measure, shape, sew & test-fit
Our in-house upholsterer develops the pieces around your van. The team can check fit as the work progresses and coordinate the interior with other restoration work happening in the shop.
Review the finish & learn its care
At handover, look over the completed upholstery with us and discuss cleaning and care for the materials chosen. Give yourself time to get familiar with the refreshed seating and camper layout.

A few useful answers.
Can you keep the original character of my van?
Yes. A sympathetic refresh can take its cues from the original color, stitching, panel layout, and overall feel. Send photographs of what you want to preserve. Exact original fabrics and colors depend on availability and the condition of the material being matched.
Can I bring my own design or fabric?
Ideas and reference images are welcome. If you have a specific fabric or leather in mind, share its details or a sample before buying it. We need to consider upholstery suitability, stretch, pattern direction, quantity, and how it will be used in the van.
Can we discuss just part of the interior?
Tell us which seats, cushions, or panels you would like to improve. We can review the proposed work and current scheduling availability. If you want to work in stages, it helps to plan the overall colors and materials at the beginning.
How much does upholstery cost, and how long does it take?
The answer depends on the number of pieces, their condition, foam or panel repairs, material selection, and the complexity of the design. Send photographs and your priorities for an initial discussion; confirm the estimate, material availability, and workshop schedule with us before arranging travel.
How should I look after the finished upholstery?
Follow the care guidance for the actual materials installed. Remove loose sand and grit, deal with spills promptly, and check before using a strong cleaner or conditioner. We can discuss appropriate cleaning and care at handover.
