VAN MODS & HOW-TO'S

Westfalia Propane Tank Delete and 1lb Canister Installation

MOD submitted by Robert Peters. Out with the ancient under-van propane tank... replaced with adaption for 1-lb. propane canisters. Works great, feels safer, no more worries about being able to fill the old iron tank, no more issues entering toll tunnels or boarding ferries, and saves some weight on what's already the heavy side of the Westy... I’d like to know mor info on how to do this. Like how it’s connected to the stove. Was the hose connected to the copper pipe on the opposite end?

Interesting mod. Why wouldnt you use a regulator with a valve to close and open the flow of gas? do you have to manually disconnect the 1 lb can every time?

The stove connection is, I believe a standard 5/8" connector. You just get regulator with a 5/8" female on one end of the line and a connector to hook up to a standard propane tank on the other. Then adapt that to work with a 1lp canister.

You will want to disconnect it when driving just to sidestep the possibility of the seal coming lose. Just a smart thing to do. When in camp, you can leave it connected for a few days.

If you do disconnect, screw a cap on the canister as an extra safety. The canisters have a built-in valve, but better safe than sorry. You just want to minimize opportunities to leak gas in an enclosed environment.
